Soraya Arnelas will represent Spain at Eurovision 2009

The choice of the representative for Eurovision 2009 was decided by Spain, which, according to the conditions of the contest, like Great Britain, Germany and France, automatically goes to the final. Therefore, now only the name of the finalist is unknown: Russia. The candidate for the Eurovision host country will be determined on March 7. Spain will be represented in Moscow in May by the singer Soraya with the song La noche es para mi.

Spain began looking for a candidate to participate through an invitation on the Myspace website. Thus, the 30 best songs were selected and divided into three semifinals. In the end, two turned out to be the best, with the same number of points, with the difference that Soraya was the public's favorite and her competitor was the professional jury's favorite. But, according to the rules of this year's Spanish national final, the winner was the favorite of the public vote.

Spain, like its fellow Eurovision organizers and automatic finalists, has not performed well in recent years. Not even “heavy artillery” helps Spain. The once popular female trio Las Ketchup did not achieve outstanding results in the 2006 Athens competition. The last time Spain won Eurovision was in 1969. Then the singer Salomé brought her victory, who was remembered for her outfit: her dress was made of porcelain and weighed 14 kg.

This year Spain will be represented at Eurovision by the singer Soraya Arnelas with the song La Noche Es Para Mi. The national qualification round to represent Spain in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow ended ahead of schedule on February 28, 2009. Singer Soraya Arnelas received the right to perform in Moscow with her song “La noche es para my". Soraya was born on September 13, 1982 in the town of Valencia de Alcántara.

Soraya Arnelas, with The Night Is For Me, will be the representative of TVE at the next Moscow Festival by winning the Spanish pre-selection Eurovision 2009: The Return, which has just been held at the Casino L'Aliança del Poblenou, in Barcelona. Soraya got the highest score in the televoting, 12 votes, while the jury gave her 10. With 22 votes and thanks to the public's quality vote, she beat Melody, to whom the jury gave the highest score.

In third place was Santa Fé, with Samba House; Mirela, with Nada es comparable a ti, was fourth; and Virginia, with True love, fifth.

In the gala broadcast live this morning on public channel 1 of TVE, Soraya, who was second finalist in the fourth edition of the Operación Triunfo contest, obtained 22 points in the final gala to designate the representative of Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009.

The blonde from Extremadura, with her Dance-pop style song, initially tied with her youngest opponent, the Sevillian Melody, 19 years old, in the 10 votes cast by the jury members, although finally the popular televote, with 12 votes, they made the winner.

In addition to Melody, finalists such as the groups La La Love You, Noelia Cano, Salva Ortega, Virgina, Jorge González, Gran baobab, Santa Fe, Mirela, Isi and Julia Bermejo participated in this grand final.

The official Eurovision jury on TVE was formed by José Luis Uribarri, Mariola Orellana, Toni Garrido, Mauro Canut and Víctor Escudero. Corazón de fuego was the album with which Soraya debuted in 2005 and later came others such as Dolce Vita in 2007 and the most recent «Sin fear» in 2008.
