The Spanish higher education institutions (54 universities) 1,684,445 students were enrolled during 1996 - 1997. The largest public universities in Spain are the Complutense University of Madrid, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1971), the University of Barcelona (1450), the University of Granada (1526), the University of Salamanca, the University of Seville (1502) and the University of Valencia (1500). You can also pursue higher education through the National University of Distance Education (UNED), which had 129,998 students in 1995/96.
