ALMUDENA CID

The «veteran» who remains among the best

With the satisfaction that things well done produce, the three Spanish gymnasts who participated in the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championship enjoy a well-deserved vacation. The eight hours of daily training and the hard days of the competition have been parked for a few days. Taking advantage of their break, AULA has spoken with Almudena Cid, Jennifer Colino and Carolina Rodríguez so that they can tell us how they experienced the World Cup and what they expect from their promising future.

CESAR OLD-LEG

The three Spanish gymnasts who participated in the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup fully agree in their assessment, and repeat, each one separately, the same word to define the memory they have of the event: unforgettable. The three affirm that they will never forget what they experienced in the four days that the competition lasted (from October 18 to 21). The reason: the impressive atmosphere that the Spanish public created, which made the World Cup something really special for the three of them.

For our veteran, the 21-year-old Almudena Cid, it has been a «very hard World Cup, because there have been many days of competition.» So it was. First, all three had to compete in the team contest, which ended on Friday the 19th. Our team achieved a meritorious fifth place.

For Almudena, the competition continued until the last day, since she qualified for the individual final (which assesses the set of the four devices in which she competed: hoop, rope, ball and clubs) and for the hoop final, which was played on Sunday. She in the first one she was ninth, and in the hoop she got a sixth place. «I'm very happy with ninth place, but I'm more satisfied with sixth place in the hoop», says Almudena. Why? «Because I have very good memories of that day,» says Almudena full of pride. And is not for less. Pavilion 9 of Ifema was overturned with her, and there was a very special moment when her departure to her track was announced over the loudspeaker. The public began to roar and gave Almudena one of the happiest moments of her life. “The feeling I experienced in those moments will never be forgotten in my life. It's even better than the Olympic finals I've played in”, acknowledges Almudena.

She now enjoys a few short days off. She will soon begin work again to remain among the best in the world and see her great dream come true: to reach the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

Jennifer Colino

At 15 years old, she is already fifteenth in the world. C.P. At 15 years old, Jennifer Colino is already a reality of our gymnastics. In this World Cup, she has shown that she has the strength to achieve her dream as a gymnast: «Be among the top three on the podium at the Olympic Games.» At the moment, and according to what she tells us, she has achieved “something very big”: finishing fifteenth in the world in this championship. She affirms that she obtained fifth place in the team competition and that it is «a good position», and even more so if you take into account that Carolina Rodríguez and she were «rookies» in this type of competition. «For me, this World Cup has been something unforgettable,» says Jennifer from her vacation break.

Her reasons are several: rubbing shoulders with the best in the world, executing the exercises with the confidence that she demonstrated and, above all, the support of the public. “It has been something incredible. She knew that people were going to cheer, but she didn't think it was going to be that, that it would make your hair stand on end. At the end of the exercise I could not believe my eyes. They threw stuffed animals at me, carnations… I saw it as a child on television and I couldn't believe it was happening to me”, recalls Jennifer. In November she will start her 1st year Bachillerato classes, which she will have to combine with the eight hours of daily training.

Caroline Rodriguez

This Leonese is the youngest of the three and before her a hopeful future opens up. With her attitude (she affirms that “by working she can become an Olympic champion”) and her sacrifice, she can go very far. She remembers the World Cup as «an unforgettable experience», and she does not hesitate to show herself «very happy» with her performance. Surely in a short time we will see her among the best of her.

More things

GYMNASTICS

After asking the three what gymnastics is for them, these have been their answers. Almudena: “For me it is art. In addition to a sport of great beauty and great aesthetics, it is also transmitting what the gymnast feels”. Jennifer: “For me it is my life. Since I was little I have combined it with studies. They are the two most important things in my life.” Carolina: “For me it is almost everything. Without gymnastics I wouldn't be me."

THANKS

The three also agreed on a very important aspect: unhesitatingly thanking their coaches. They say that they not only learn to be better gymnasts and that they help them in everything. As we have been told, they also help them to be better people.

PROMISING QUARRY

The gold medal that our national rhythmic gymnastics team won at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 encouraged thousands of girls to take up this sport. The result is a young quarry that offers a hopeful future to rhythmic gymnastics in our country.
